Loose At The Zoo
are you a good zoo keeper?

Loose At The Zoo is a fun chase and tag game for preschoolers. Imitating zoo animals by actions and trying to catch each other are activities children enjoy.

zoo keeper game

Object of game

To not get caught by the Zookeeper

Number of players

6 or more

Equipment

One animal picture card per player
2 pieces of rope or a stick of chalk
Large outdoor area

Set up

Cut pictures of different zoo animals out of magazines or coloring books and glue them onto index cards. Make one card per player. You could also use animal stickers and attach those to the index cards.

Draw two chalk lines parallel to each other about twenty feet apart. Or use two lengths of rope.

Choose one player to be the Zookeeper.

The Zookeeper should be stationed between the two pieces of rope. The other children should be standing behind one of the pieces of rope. These players are the Zoo Animals.

How to play

Give each of the Zoo Animals a picture card that tells them what animal they should pretend to be.

The Zookeeper patrols the Zoo, walking back and forth between the ropes and making sure the animals don't escape. While the Zookeeper is patrolling the area, he should should call out the names of different zoo animals.

The player whose card matches that animal must run as fast as they can to the opposite side of the play area before the Zookeeper can tag him.

Any player who is caught must freeze and stay in position for the rest of the game.

Any animal that makes it across to the other side should go back to the starting line for another round.

The game is over when all the Zoo Animals are frozen.

Winning the game

The last person to get frozen wins the game.

Variations of loose at the zoo

Instead of freezing the Zoo Animals when they are tagged, they can become assistant Zookeepers and help to capture the animals. The more players captured, the harder it will be to escape.

If you can find a large variety of animal pictures, you may give those players who managed to escape the Zookeeper a new animal to play for the next turn. This keeps the Zookeeper guessing as to what animal each player becomes.
