Kriss Kross Puzzles 101

Kriss kross puzzles are also known as "criss cross" and "fill-in" puzzles. They resemble crossword puzzles but they don't require you to answer a clue to come up with the words to put into the grid. The words are provided for you.

Puzzle Layout

Fill-in puzzles have two main parts; a grid and a word list.

Sample Puzzle Grid

kriss kross puzzles Grids for criss cross puzzles are typically free form.
They can take on any shape.

They differ from crossword puzzles in that there are no black squares.

You might also notice that there are no numbers in the grid. You aren't answering clues, so numbers are not necessary.

Some puzzle makers will bold a set of squares to give you a hint of the best place to start solving the puzzle.

The Word List

The word list is typically sorted by number of letters in a word.
Dog, Cat and Cow would be listed under a heading of 3 Letters. While elephants and porcupine would be listed under 9 Letters. Each number category would list the words in alphabetical order.

The word list doesn't indicate across or down placement of the words.

It may look and sound easy, but that isn't always the case.

Kriss Kross Variations

Picture Puzzles

A kriss kross puzzle that uses pictures for the clues instead of words. These are typically made for children, although I've seen a few for adults that were hard to solve.

Number Puzzles

Instead of words on the list, you are given numbers to place into the puzzle. These are fun to solve and a nice break from dealing with words. Number Kriss Kross puzzles can be challenging.
