Hot Potato
tossing and catching game

Hot Potato can be played indoors or outdoors depending on what type of potato you use.

A real potato can be used, but only in outdoor conditions.
My granddaughter has an arm on her that could do some major damage if she tossed a real potato inside the house.

For playing indoors or with very young children who may get hurt when a real potato hits them, use a rolled up sock, a spongy ball or purchase the game.

If you purchase the game, it comes equipped with a musical tone that is set to stop at various times which can make the game a lot of fun.

If you use a home made potato sock or a sponge ball, you'll have to use a music source or have someone shout out "hot" at various intervals during the game.

Object of game

To catch and toss the Hot Potato quickly without getting caught holding it

Number of players

4 or more

Equipment

Space enough for players to form a large circle
A potato (a tennis ball, beanbag or water balloon are good substitutes for a potato)

Set up

Have children sit in a circle with their legs crossed.
Pick one player to be the leader.

How to play

The leader starts the game by tossing the potato to the player of her choice and then immediately shuts his eyes and keeps them shut.

The player who the potato was tossed to, must catch it and toss it to another player in the circle as quickly as possible.

Players should keep tossing the potato amongst themselves. If a player fails to catch the potato they should fetch it and return it to the game.

After a short time, the leader should shout "Hot" and open his eyes. The player holding the potato at that point leaves the circle and is out of the game. The game continues until one player is left.

Winning the game

To be the last player left in the circle.

Variations on hot potato

The player who gets caught with the potato can become the leader, this way everyone stays in the game and has fun.

If you play the game outdoors, you can use a water balloon instead of a potato or beanbag. Make sure to have plenty of pre-filled water balloons on hand.

If the game starts getting out of hand, you can have the players hand the potato to the person sitting on their left rather than tossing it through the air.
