Beggar My Neighbor
Card Game

Beggar My Neighbor is a fun card game that requires very little skill and a whole lot of luck.

playing cards

Object

To win all the cards. You may put a time limit on the game and consider the winner as the person with the most cards at the end of the agreed time.

Number of players

2 - 6 players.

Equipment

One deck of playing cards. If there are three or more players you may want to mix two decks together.

Set up

One player deals out all the cards in a clockwise direction, one card at a time and face down. Some players may end up with a card or two more than the others, this is fine. Players should put their cards into a pile face down in front of them without looking at their cards.

To play

The player to the left of the dealer turns up his top card and places it in the center of the table.
If the card has a face value from 2 to 10, the turn passes to the next player.
Play continues to the left until a face card or an ace is turned up.When an ace or face card is turned up, the next player must transfer (make a payment) to the middle pile a certain number of cards.
Payment Amounts:
For an A transfer four cards
For a K transfer three cards
For a Q transfer two cards
For a J transfer one card
If in the course of adding these payment cards to the stack no new aces or face cards appear, the original player takes possession of the middle cards, placing them face down at the bottom of his pile.

If an ace or face card does turn up, play stops even if all of the payment hasn't been made. Now the original player must transfer cards equal to the new ace or face card's payment value. If no ace or face cards show up during that payment, the second player gets to take the center stack.

Winning Beggar My Neighbor

The chance to win the center pile will pass back and forth many times during the game. Anyone who runs out of cards is out of the game. The winner is the person with either the most cards at the end of the allotted time, or who ends up with all the cards.
